Trying my hand at something new

My broken leg is going to require surgery. It is scheduled for Monday. Until I start recovering from the surgery I am stuck either in the bed or on the couch with my leg elevated and packed in ice to keep the swelling down.

I decided to teach myself to knit. It is something that I have always wanted to try but just have never had the time to do or the willingness to stop doing something else to learn. Well, what a perfect opportunity.

My husband took me the store in the trusty wheelchair and I picked out a good book with a dvd to go with it and then some yarn and needles and away I went!

Either it is easier than I think or pain killers give you an extra relaxed sense about things or maybe I was just happy to have something to do! But the first try was just casting on and practicing some knit and purl stitches. I was so excited after doing about 10 rows that I slid the whole thing off the needle to proudly examine my work and yup... as you can guess... I unraveled the whole thing! And cracked myself up in the process. Guess I forgot to turn the page and learn how to bind it off or cast off!

1st try, stitches so tight I could hardly move them!

On to a test piece for a project.

Look Ma!!! I'm knitting!

A completed 'test' patch

Now... onto a project, of course, the easiest project there is. A scarf. consisting of 20 knit stitches repeated until it is 84 inches long. Even a pain killer addled mind can hopefully handle this project!

  1. That first row is always the hardest. I'm always tearing it out and starting over, but once you get going, it is a relaxing and mindless task. You can watch TV and knit at the same time. I can't say that about embroidery and definitely not about counted cross stitch.

  3. I hope all goes well with your surgery. I'm a fairly new knitter...I learned because I wanted to knit socks and now I do! Your scarf is going to be fabulous.
